On February 7th, our community gathered in grief and solidarity at a candlelight vigil. For years, the struggles of our youth and young adults—substance abuse, mental health challenges, gun violence, and other preventable tragedies—have been a painful undercurrent in our community. Families have carried these burdens quietly, often in silence.

But in recent years, the crisis has become even more urgent. We are losing more young lives, more quickly, and the heartbreak has spread to nearly every corner of our community. The February vigil made this reality impossible to ignore—the pain and urgency in that gathering were clear: we must move from mourning to action.

That is how and why this Community Task force started >>>

The Problem

Too many of our youth and young adults are heading down destructive paths, with lives being cut short by preventable tragedies. Each loss leaves deep wounds—not just in families, but in the hopes, strength, and future of our entire community.

The Goal

In response, the Ethiopian Community in Seattle (ECS) has launched the Community Task Force—a volunteer-driven effort to confront these challenges head-on and work toward safer, healthier futures for our youth.

Our Goal is to mobilize ECS and community volunteers to guide our youth and young adults toward healthier, safer futures by:

  • Mobilizing collective action to prevent destructive paths and avoidable tragedies.
  • Raising awareness.
  • Building strong support systems.

Small Steps, Bigger Impact…

After the February vigil, we signed volunteers who stepped forward with a shared determination to do more than grieve. We gathered, listened, and brainstormed together— trying to understand and identify root causes.

Out of those sessions, we began grouping the issues into larger categories so that our response could be more focused and effective.

These discussions led us to 6 Focus Areas!

  • Mental Health
  • Substance Abuse
  • Youth Empowerment
  • Parental Training & Support
  • Gun Violence Prevention
  • Post-Crisis Counseling & Support
